At KARATULA, we are on a mission to transform the urban landscape of Metro Manila by advocating for inclusive signage design. We believe in harnessing the creativity of Filipino signage designers to enhance the lives of individuals with low vision impairment and color blindness.
Accessibility is an essential factor to consider for inclusivity, especially among persons with disabilities which is why we chose to pursue this idea for our research and eventually our project, ‘Karatula’. Walking through the streets of Manila, we see a lot of signages all over the place – some homemade and some not. Oftentimes, a number of these signages have designs that make use of elements like cursive or serif fonts, small font sizes, or tight kerning that may not be very friendly to PWDs. Our team has experience with bad eyesight, and we can only try to imagine how much more difficult it must be for people with colorblindness and low vision
Hi there! I’m Ern, a website designer at Karatula. My job is to create a user-friendly and accessible online experience for sign makers, keeping in mind the needs of those with color blindness. I translate complex design principles into clear and intuitive interfaces, ensuring everyone can navigate Karatula with ease. This means using high-contrast color palettes, incorporating accessibility tools, and prioritizing clear information architecture.
Hello, I’m Jenica! My job in Karatula is to research and collate information about low vision and colorblindness, and how to make signages more accessible for people affected by them.
I create informative illustrations that aim to help signage designers further visualize how important each design element is when it comes to creating signs for accessibility.
